The Waikiki Surfboard Racks have been a part of the iconic Waikiki Beach landscape for decades. Located right behind the Waikiki police substation, these racks were once filled with custom surfboards used by some of the most famous Waikiki Beach Boys. These legendary surfers included Duke Kahanamoku, Rabbit Kekai, and Buffalo Keaulana who all made their mark in surfing history.
For years, the racks provided a safe place to store surfboards while beachgoers enjoyed the waves and sunsets of Waikiki. Unfortunately, that all changed in October of 2021 when an arsonist set fire to the racks causing over $650,000 in damages. The blaze destroyed more than 500 boards and left many people devastated.
Fortunately, justice was served when 48-year-old Glenn Helton was charged with first-degree arson for setting fire to the racks. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and ordered to pay restitution for the damages he caused.
Since then, efforts have been made to improve security at Nalu’s Storage which provides secure surfboard lockers just steps from Waikiki Beach. This has allowed beachgoers to continue enjoying their favorite pastime without worrying about their boards being stolen or damaged by vandals.
The Waikiki Surfboard Racks are a reminder of how important it is to protect our beaches and ocean resources from those who would do them harm. We must remain vigilant against those who seek to destroy our natural resources and take away our freedoms so that we can continue enjoying this beautiful part of Hawaii for generations to come.
